In rebel-held eastern Congo, most of those killed in the fighting are civilians. The rebels, and the various Congolese and foreign militias battling against them, are committing human rights abuses. Rwandan Hutu militias have been systematically raping women as part of their campaign. The conflict has also greatly heightened ethnic tension in the region. Congolese Tutsis are branded as traitors for supporting Tutsi-led Rwanda's military backing for the rebellion.
