NPR's Larry Abramson reports on today's Senate Commerce Committee hearing, at which senators considered the Federal Trade Commission's call for new regulatory powers and tougher laws to protect consumers' online privacy. Representatives of online businesses protested that the FTC's proposals would be expensive to implement and that consumers can read online privacy statements and decide which sites to deal with.
