NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports from south Lebanon that United Nations peacekeepers who have been in the area for 22 years are unsure of their mission now that Israel has pulled out of the zone it occupied as a so-called security buffer. Israel hopes the UN will take up positions vacated by the Israelis and their surrogates, but UN officials are reluctant to do so until a secure peace is established. A special U.N. envoy is in Beirut, conferring with Lebanese government officials over plans to increase the number of peacekeepers assigned to the region.
