Give a Boy a Book

Black male students read, on average, two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half grade levels below white male students. Essayist Ellis Cose says the fortunes of young black men are derailed by their lower-than-average literacy rate. This Father's Day, the Village Foundation of Alexandria, Va., has sponsored Give a Boy a Book Day to encourage reading among young boys.
