Young Umps
In suburban Chicago, the Darien Youth Club baseball league has been paying 12- and 13-year-olds $10 a game to work as umpires. This is, in fact, illegal according to state child labor law, which says kids under 14 can only be paid for a very select list of activities. When an anonymous complaint reached the Illinois Department of Labor, the youth club was investigated and ordered by the state to stop employing such young children.
