Death Penalty

NPR's Barbara Bradley reports on a federal judge in New York who says he's ready to declare the federal death penalty unconstitutional. Judge Jed Rakoff says he wants the government to explain why so many condemned inmates turn out to be innocent. Death penalty experts say the judge may have a hard time making the link between federal death sentences and innocent defendants because most such cases have been in state courts.
