Tom Ridge on the Hill
NPR's David Welna reports on today's visit to Capitol Hill by Tom Ridge, the director of the Office of Homeland Security. Ridge met with congressional leaders and delivered the White House's proposal for the creation of a Cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security. But questions about cost, size and jurisdiction remain. (3:30) (Please note this segment was corrected on air on June 19, 2002: "Yesterday, we reported on congressional reaction to creating a new Department of Homeland Security. In the piece, we misquoted House Majority Leader Dick Armey. He was responding to Democratic leader Richard Gephardt's call for legislation to be ready by Sept. 11. Armey actually said Gephardt's proposal "will be embraced by the president and by us." ").
