New Mexico School Lets Students Letter in Poetry
The high school letter jacket is a tradition separating the jocks from the non-varsity crowd. But at the Santa Fe Desert Academy, a small private high school in New Mexico, a different kind of student qualifies for the coveted jacket — those who make the Precision Poetry Drill Team.
Poetry Drill Team Performs
The Santa Fe Desert Academy Precision Poetry Drill Team's performances are more interpretation than mere recitation. That means most poems in the team's repertoire get shortened, and some are sung as rounds, creating what director Gary Glazner calls a "very choral effect." Hear the team perform:
* Performed by Zak Hoerning-Silva, Jake Hayman, Danny Ross, Joe Clark, Lucas Buck, Phoebe Toole, Zoe Morris and Tashi Yazid. Directed by Gary Glazner.
'Kubla Khan,' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
'The Tyger,' by William Blake
'We Real Cool,' by Gwendolyn Brooks
