Galactic may have begun as a straightforwardly funky jam band, but it's since evolved to incorporate electronic elements and a greater emphasis on hip-hop.
The band's 1996 debut, Coolin' Off, cast Galactic as an accomplished purveyor of '70s-style funk. In the years that followed, 1998's Crazyhorse Mongoose and 2000's Late for the Future set the stage for the modern electronics and odd voodoo-funk of 2003's Ruckus. A new disc, From the Corner to the Block, followed this past summer, and includes guest appearances from a wide variety of underground hip-hop stars, including Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab, Chali2na, Lateef and The Coup's Boots Riley.
