Don't Miss: Closed Casinos and Fast Pigs
Vacationing in New Jersey is a real gamble this week. State parks and historic sites were forced to close today because state lawmakers can't agree on a budget. Even the Atlantic City casinos have been shut down. Why the casinos, which are privately run? Because, Morning Edition tells us, New Jersey requires a state inspector to be on the premises, and there aren't any available because of the budget impasse.
John Hendren also had an interesting report this morning on what happens when the U.S. military takes up residence on an island that is just 30 miles long and five miles wide. Now that the military is basing more resources on the U.S. territory of Guam, prices are going up, jobs are being created and the locals are worried about the impact of the Americans on their lifestyle and culture. They should ask the U.S. military for references from the Japanese on Okinawa.
But the piece that really got my attention this morning was about pigs. Pigs that race on "Porkchop Downs." The best part of the story was this statement by the track's Master of Ceremonies Zach Johnson:
"You want a good beefy rear end for explosion out of the gates and a good slender front end for coming around the corners. And once you find that and some Oreo cookies, you've got a good racing pig on your hands."
