NPR News Agenda: The Wednesday Editors' Meeting

Heads up -- activist and singer/guitarist Bonnie Raitt talks to NPR's Neal Conan at 3:00 p.m. EDT today on Talk of the Nation. Raitt will be in-studio with her band, and NPR staff members are clamoring for the few available seats. You can hear the show live on a member station near you... and if you can't make the broadcast, an MP3 of the performance will be available Friday afternoon, July 7, at the Talk of the Nation page.

If you're more interested in hardcore news, NPR's All Things Considered is plotting full coverage of the latest crisis involving North Korea. Despite its 1998 pledge to stop missile testing, North Korea lit the fuse on seven missiles over the past 24 hours, including a long-range variety capable of hitting the West Coast of the U.S. Lots of reaction this evening from the U.N., the Bush administration and the two players closest to North Korea's line of fire: Japan and South Korea.

I'll also be tuning in tonight to hear the start of House and Senate hearings on immigration reform. I want to know if this country has a prayer of instituting immigration reform in my lifetime. Indications thus far are not promising.
