Politics Wednesday: Immigration

While Rome Burns... the House and Senate hold hearings. House and Senate Republicans held competing hearings today to air views on immigration. At least, that's what they say they are trying to do. In point of fact, drawn-out congressional hearings almost certainly mean there will be no resolution before November elections.

That is an outcome that suits a lot of lawmakers just fine, because immigration generally is viewed as a no-win issue for an American politician.

Meanwhile, state and local governments are screaming for relief from the burdens of providing social services for the illegal immigrants pouring across U.S. borders. Hospitals are turning away patients because they can no longer afford to treat some many of the indigent.

Question: Is Congress just playing for time with these hearings and if so, how does the poor abused taxpayer get his/her elected representatives to take care of the nation's business?

Speaking of immigration, an interesting AP item today on immigration and U.S. population growth. It says all of those immigrants are helping to hold America's head above water. Take a look.
