Immigration Raid Leaves Schools Scrambling

When the Michael Bianco, Inc., garment company was raided in New Bedford, Mass., last Tuesday, more than 350 workers were arrested — many of them with children enrolled in the town's schools.

Fred Fuentes, assistant superintendent for equity and diversity for the school district, says his first challenge is getting an accurate count of how many students have been directly affected. An added challenge: reassuring other children of undocumented immigrants who fear their families may be the next target.

Fuentes says he is talking daily with principals, helping arrange counseling for affected students, and working with social services and community groups.
