Peter Garrett has joined the ranks of musicians who have used their fame to get into politics.

The former lead singer of the rock group Midnight Oil follows in the footsteps of John Hall, U.S. Congressman from New York and former member of the band Orleans, and Martha Reeves, of Martha and the Vandellas fame, who is now a Detroit councilwoman.

Garrett is the environment, heritage and arts minister in Australia's new government.
