Informal street memorials, or shrines — often decorated with stuffed toys, photos and written condolences — are commonly embraced in some communities as a way to honor those who died tragically.

In a city of monuments commemorating famous people, places and events, a Washington, D.C., freelance photographer has chosen to document memorials to the lesser known. Lloyd Wolf discusses his photography. He's joined by Lonnae O'Neal Parker, of The Washington Post.
