Ultraspontane is the most recent Gypsy jazz album released by the John Jorgenson Quintet. Brian Blauser hide caption
Although his career has been stylistically varied, multi-instrumentalist John Jorgenson sounds most comfortable performing the Django Reinhardt-inspired Gypsy swing heard here in live performance.
Jorgenson, along with former Byrds guitarist Chris Hillman, founded the Desert Rose Band, which had a string of hit country songs in the '80s. Jorgenson went on to found the Hellecasters, a spectacular guitar-slinging trio rounded out by Will Ray and Jerry Donahue. In 1994, he received a call to join the touring troupe of Elton John, where he stayed for six years.
Though his CD, After You've Gone, treaded lightly on Gypsy swing, Jorgenson fully embraced his love of the genre with 2004's Franco-American Swing. He's even been enlisted to portray Reinhardt in the feature film Head in the Clouds, and Jorgenson recently released another CD of Gypsy tunes, Ultraspontane, on his own J2 Records.
The John Jorgenson Quintet features Stephan Dudash on five-string viola, Gonzalo Bergara on rhythm guitar, Charlie Chadwick on bass and percussionist Rick Reed.
