Tom Vilsack

Vilsack was first elected Iowa governor in 1998 and served two terms. He has a reputation as a centrist who balanced Iowa's budget and resisted tax increases. He has pushed alternative energy sources as a way to revive the nation's struggling rural areas.

Arne Duncan

Energy — Steven Chu

Steven Chu

Chu is a renowned physicist and green-energy advocate who runs the Energy Department's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The Nobel Prize-winning physicist has made climate change the centerpiece of his career, establishing the Helios Center at the Berkeley lab to research new fuels for transportation. Chu did most of his work at AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey before taking a research position at Stanford University.

Homeland Security — Janet Napolitano

Janet Napolitano

Napolitano "has a deep experience in the homeland security arena," says one expert, as her border state has more illegal crossers than any other. Her first national exposure came in 1991 as Anita Hill's lawyer in her sexual harassment case against Clarence Thomas. President Clinton later appointed her U.S. attorney for Arizona; five years after that, she was elected the state's attorney general. She was elected governor of Arizona in 2002.

Ken Salazar

Salazar was elected to the Senate in 2004 and has opposed drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He has objected to the Bush administration's efforts to lease Western lands for oil shale development, and while in Congress, he co-sponsored a bill to create a new land conservation system to permanently protect 26 million acres of national monuments and wilderness areas.

Peter Orszag

Eric Shinseki

He is probably best-known as the general who questioned Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's strategy in Iraq on the eve of the war, declaring before a Senate hearing that "several hundred thousand soldiers are probably a figure that would be required."

Hillary Clinton

As first lady, she traveled to more than 80 countries and says she "values diplomacy as well as a strong military."

Shaun Donovan

Susan Rice

Mary Schapiro

Schapiro was a former SEC commissioner under Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush and was appointed acting chairman of the agency under President Clinton. She currently heads the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, which describes itself as the largest nongovernmental regulator for all securities firms doing business with the U.S. public. She was chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission from 1994 to 1996, a post she was named to by President Clinton.

Timothy Geithner

Eric Holder

Christina Romer

Robert Gates

Gates served as Central Intelligence Agency chief under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993, during the Gulf War. He is well-regarded in Washington intelligence and military circles and is also a member of the Iraq Working Group headed by former Secretary of State James Baker — the bipartisan group to make recommendations on Iraq strategy. A native of Kansas, Gates spent nearly 27 years with the CIA, which he joined in 1966. He was the only career officer in the agency's history to rise from entry-level employee to director.

Environmental Protection Agency — Lisa Jackson

Lisa Jackson

She also worked for the EPA for 16 years in several capacities, including acting as an administrator in the Superfund program to clean up hazardous waste sites.
