Now in its 15th year together, the award-winning bluegrass group Blue Highway plays a special Mountain Stage taped at Tamarack in Beckley, W.Va. The group still boasts all five original members, each highly regarded for his individual accomplishments.
Guitarist and singer Tim Stafford was a driving force behind Alison Krauss and Union Station throughout that band's initial successes in the early 1990s. Dobro player Rob Ickes is the most awarded instrumentalist in the history of the International Bluegrass Music Awards (earning 10 Instrumentalist of the Year awards). Bassist Wayne Taylor is a gifted songwriter in addition to his upright-bass abilities. Jason Burleson is a noted instrumental composer, and his singing anchors Blue Highway's four-part harmony.
Playing mandolin and guitar throughout the set, Shawn Lane (an alumnus of Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver) leads the group in the title track to its latest record Through the Window of a Train, before handing lead duties over to Stafford for an adaptation of a sacred steel hymn, "Wonderous Love." West Virginian Carl Rutherford wrote the miner's tale "West Virginia's Last Hand Loader," from the group's Wind to the West album.
