  • "Russell and Honeybee"
  • "I'll See You Soon"
  • "If He's So Good to You"

Making his second appearance on Mountain Stage, Huntington, W.Va.-based singer-songwriter Jeff Ellis performs a song from his latest album, Covering the Distance, as well as three new songs from its still-in-progress follow-up.

"I'm Not Leaving This Time" earned Ellis a berth in the finals of the 2008 Mountain Stage NewSong contest. "Russell and Honeybee" showcases his ability to change vocal registers, while "I'll See You Soon" captures a heartbreaking story pulled from an obituary.

Ellis has been a mainstay on the West Virginia music scene since fronting the folk-rock band Guinness Clarke's Wine and releasing several solo albums. Covering the Distance is his second record since returning from a U.S. Army Reserves tour of duty in Kuwait. Ellis is currently recording new songs in Athens, Ohio.

This feature originally ran May 14, 2009.
