The Archie Bronson Outfit's new album won me over the instant it started amid fierce guitars and hammered drums. "Magnetic Warrior" is the best opening track I've heard on a record this year. If you want something loud, something for your angst or just a good highway ride, start here. Be careful, though: The music of this British trio is downright trance-inducing, if you can imagine being tranced out and highly caffeinated at the same time.

Coconut is the third Archie Bronson Outfit record and the band's first since 2006. The group recorded 50 minidiscs' worth of tunes in an old farmhouse basement and picked the best ones, the ones that fit best, to make this album. There are moments when Coconut doesn't feel like a fever dream, but that's just a setup for more modal madness; just counterpoint in the tradition of early Captain Beefheart and old Pere Ubu. Turn this one up — I can't turn it off.
