Since its formation in 2004, the Scottish indie-rock band Frightened Rabbit has been developing a sound that's introspective and folk-tinged but undeniably intense and powerful. The group's breakthrough album, Midnight Organ Fight, helped propel Frightened Rabbit to international acclaim.
Led by singer and guitarist Scott Hutchison, Frightened Rabbit recently released The Winter of Mixed Drinks. The grand, sweeping album finds the band infusing its oft-bleak sound with traces of optimism. Intelligent wordplay, densely layered guitars and booming choruses help support the album's themes of liberation and escape, and the final product sounds urgent and important, but still soulful and emotive. Here, Frightened Rabbit plays live and Hutchison discusses the group's influences, both geographical and musical, on the new album.
