Yo La Tengo first appeared on Mountain Stage 18 years ago; it returns armed with songs from its latest studio album, Popular Songs. The New Jersey indie-pop band is also featured on a recent dual-DVD release of Science Is Fiction/Sounds of Science, in which it performs its compositions for the films of French avant-garde filmmaker Jean Painleve. Also recently issued on CD, They Shoot We Score, compiles Yo La Tengo's soundtrack contributions to motion pictures such as Game 6, Junebug, Old Joy and Shortbus.
Featuring Georgia Hubley on drums and vocals; Ira Kaplan on vocals, keyboards, percussion and guitars; and James McNew on bass and guitar, the trio's experimental rock goes over well with the crowd gathered in Morgantown, W.Va., home of West Virginia University.
Mountain Stage house pianist Bob Thompson is also featured in this segment, performing the Thelonious Monk composition "In Walked Bud."
This is a repeat performance of Mountain Stage.
