With guitars and electric cello, Murder by Death has successfully bridged the gap between raucous, energetic rock music and softer, low-key country. The Bloomington, Ind., band has gained notice not only for its musical offerings, but also for its lyrical matter. With many songs touching on dark, ghastly themes -- from zombies to the devil -- Murder by Death is one of the prettiest morbid bands working today.
On Good Morning, Magpie, the group has crafted its first non-concept album, although there are still plenty of detailed narratives threading the record. A sprawling, ambitious work, Good Morning, Magpie makes good on Murder by Death’s ability to heighten suspense in its music, and bring the listener into its darkly-crafted dream world. You can practically see the barren towns and dark woods that serve as the backdrop to the band's storylines.
