When recruiting band members, Jered Gummere turned first to his girlfriend, bassist Melissa Elias, with whom he shares a love of the Misfits, Pavement and Richard Hell. The couple wrote songs and gathered more members to start The Ponys in 2001. It turns out that those shared loves aren't too far from the band's sound: arty post-punk with hooks that recall the Cure in its heyday. The Ponys quickly rose to prominence and toured with the likes of The Fall, The Unicorns and The Fiery Furnaces.
Seattle-based KEXP presents a diverse mix of music, live performances and podcasts from indie rock and punk to jazz and old school soul.
