During a recent visit to KCRW's basement studios, the Baltimore trio Future Islands got to the point with a simple but effective formula: Keyboardist Gerrit Welmers sets an off-kilter rhythm and synth pattern, bassist William Cashion locks the groove with galloping bursts of low end, and Samuel Herring dispenses incisive lyrics in a distinctively raspy tone. These post-punk musical currents churn with scrappy urgency, as Future Islands' members perform songs from their new album, On the Water.
