WFUV Presents: Matthew E. WhiteWFUV

Matthew E. White impressed us with his arranging skills and thoughtful artistry on his first album, 2012's Big Inner. Now the innovative musician, based out of Richmond, Va., is back with Fresh Blood. His new songs not only feature more carefully crafted melodies, but also demonstrate White's impressive growth as a lyricist.

"Circle 'Round The Sun" is a well-worn phrase in old blues tunes, and it served as the inspiration behind White's song of the same name. What started as a love song turned into a moving gospel elegy, supported by a slow and stirring arrangement built around guitar, bass, percussion and lap steel. Here, White and his band give an enchanting performance live in WFUV's studios.
