Hometown: Oslo, Norway

Genre: Folk

Why We're Excited: Americana may be rooted in simple American roots music — country, folk, blues, rock — but its future may well be driven by the way the style reverberates beyond America. On last year's While I Was Asleep, Darling West injects its chosen genre with an ethereal quality well suited to its native Norway, where musicians come by a sense of majesty honestly. "Rolling On" may be sparsely adorned, but its ingredients (guitars that shimmer and slide, surprisingly subtle bits of stomping and clapping, rich vocal harmonies) are woven together with tremendous skill.
