Ever wonder why sometimes you are left on hold for an hour when you call customer service and sometimes they answer right away? Kashmir Hill, a reporter from The New York Times, says it could be your consumer score.

Companies keep records of our purchases, our store returns, our online orders and even our online conversations. And all of this information is then used to determine your consumer 'value.' The more profitable you are, the better service you might get.
