When the rapper Mac Miller died tragically in Sep. 2018, he left behind an unfinished album he'd been working on with producer Jon Brion. Now, 18 months later, the long-anticipated follow-up to Miller's 2018 release, Swimming is here. Circles (a nod to swimming in circles) is a deeply personal and ultimately heartbreaking collection of confessionals, filled with both profound beauty and resignation. On this week's New Music Friday, we share some early observations on the album, along with the latest from singer Halsey, the country group Little Big Town, the return of Bombay Bicycle Club, The Innocence Mission and more. NPR Music's Ann Powers, Lars Gotrich, Mano Sundaresan, Sidney Madden and Stephen Thompson join host Robin Hilton to share their picks for the best new albums out on Jan. 17.
