Why We're Excited: Kate Davis serves as a potent reminder that, when you're studying a craft, it never hurts to study the fundamentals: Davis started out as a jazz prodigy, studied the standards... and now has an album full of alternately spiky and ethereal indie-rock. Last year, she saw the fruits of her creative left turn, releasing a gorgeous debut album (Trophy) and cowriting "Seventeen" with likeminded star Sharon Van Etten.
