Joe Biden began his speech on the fourth and final night of the Democratic National Convention with a call for light:

Here and now I give you my word.  If you entrust me with the presidency, I will draw on the best of us, not the worst.  I will be an ally of the light, not the darkness. It's time for us, for we, the people, to come together.  And make no mistake.  United we can and will overcome this season of darkness in America.

The former vice president made only brief remarks on policy. Instead, he distilled the election down to a simple choice: between human connection and callousness.

May history be able to say that the end of this chapter of American darkness began here, tonight, as love and hope and light join in the battle for the soul of the nation. And this is a battle we will win and we will do it together.

We broke down the whole speech (and the surprise, socially-distant celebration that came after) in The NPR Politics Podcast at the top of this page.

If you'd like to read NPR's annotated version of his remarks, you can find that here along with our beat-by-beat recap of the entire convention.
