To celebrate its 20th birthday last year, Grandaddy's much-loved album The Sophtware Slump received the standard re-release treatment, including B-sides and demos, along with a curious addition: the reimagining of these songs in a brand-new approach which stripped away its lush, layered elements in favor of simple reinterpretations on the piano. Founder and songwriter Jason Lytle titled the new release, fittingly, The Sophtware Slump on a Wooden Piano.

It's a testament to Lytle's lyricism and compositions that the new recordings still shine under this vastly simplified light. World Cafe had the chance to catch up with Lytle in-between one of many outdoor treks – he's an avid hiker and cyclist) – to discuss revisiting and revivifying these songs, the perils of home recording and how nature inspires his creativity. This session begins with one of his new versions of a classic Grandaddy song, "The Crystal Lake."
