It's hard to overstate just how huge Metallica is. Since the band's first album, Kill 'Em All, came out in 1983, they've become one of the best-selling bands of the modern era. They have an enormous fan base spread all over the world, and they've won pretty much any music-related award a rock band can win. But if you think Metallica is all moshing and headbanging, its latest album, S&M2, might change your mind.

Just like the original S&M album from 1999, Metallica teamed up with the San Francisco Symphony to perform a collection of the band's favorite songs from throughout its career. In this episode, you'll hear what that sounds like, and I'll be speaking with Metallica founding member and drummer Lars Ulrich about the way metal and classical music fit together.

There have been a few lineup changes throughout Metallica's four decades as a band. Past members include bass player Jason Newsted, Dave Mustaine – who went on to form Megadeath – and Cliff Burton, who passed away in 1986. Metallica's current line-up is co-founder, guitarist and lead vocalist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, bassist Robert Trujillo and, of course, drummer Lars Ulrich.
