Craig Finn often describes The Hold Steady's process as writing about the high and the hangover; the band's latest album, Open Door Policy, is less about the high and more about the hangover.
Written in 2019, Finn felt the strain of an already fractured America, penning characters and stories that revolved and power and mental health. With the band back in full swing (Franz Nicolay rejoined just a few years back), Finn refers to the group as The Hold Steady 3.0, and it shows on their most cohesive and sonically big album in the last decade.
In this session, I talk with Finn and Nicolay about the year that was 2019 and finding the right amount of details to put into a song. The band shares live performances from the stage of Brooklyn Bowl, recorded live for the World Cafe during WXPN's Virtual Free At Noon Concert.
