It is tax season! Grab your W-2s and your 1099s, 'cause it's that time of year again. While taxes can be a drag, they're also hugely important. Many people are counting on thousands of dollars in tax refunds to help support them through this economic downturn, and if they make a mistake on their taxes, they might not get that money.

There is actually a big federal program that exists to help people out. The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offers tax prep — free of charge — to low-income taxpayers. But, like almost everything in life, COVID-19 has thrown this program into disarray.

Today on The Indicator: Free tax prep. How an army of volunteers is battling through the pandemic to make sure millions of people get what they're owed.

Tax day this year is Monday, May 17, 2021. The IRS VITA and Free File programs help qualifying individuals prepare their taxes for free.
