Every now and then there is a critical mass of Latinos and Latinas making their way into mainstream news, so we take a look at the headlines in this week's show.

Everyone seems to have something to say about In The Heights, the film adaptation of the Broadway play written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes. We talk to Marcela Davison Aviles — screenwriter, producer and cultural consultant who worked on 2017's Coco — to give us a history lesson on so-called breakthrough moments for Latinos in Hollywood.

On June 15, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded one of its National Heritage Fellowships to Los Lobos. We talk to band member Louie Pérez who says the recognition is much more than a tribute to the band.

Most people associate the Pulitzer Prize with journalism, but the award also honors achievements in literature and music. On June 11, the prize for music went to Stride by Cuban American composer Tania León, a piece originally commissioned by the New York Philharmonic.

And we end this week's show with a shout out to the folks at Los Centzontles, the Bay Area cultural center that received one million dollars from MacKenzie Scott. Scott, who divorced from billionaire Jeff Bezos in 2019, has been giving away billions of dollars in philanthropy.
