'Tis the season to be jolly, but some years it can be a little harder to find that festive spirit than others. It can be complicated, it can be emotional. It can be lonely. Don't worry.

Hiss Golden Messenger's new holiday album, O Come All Ye Faithful, isn't depressing, but it does acknowledge that this time of year isn't all jingle bells, snowmen and flying reindeer. MC Taylor, the songwriter and frontman of Hiss Golden Messenger, spoke to World Cafe about what inspired him to make a Christmas album, and why this one is full of "bittersweet hope" in the session you're about to hear.

This session was recorded in front of an audience at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, where MC Taylor performed with the full band. It begins with an original song he wrote for O Come All Ye Faithful, "Hung Fire."
