Maybe you remember Girl, Interrupted from back in the '90s. There was a film starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie – but before that, there was the memoir it was based on, written by Susanna Kaysen. Kaysen wrote Girl, Interrupted about her own time spent in a psychiatric facility in the early '60s and the people she met there. That book has now inspired another adaptation — this time, for the stage.

Aimee Mann was tapped to write songs for that adaptation, and even though the show itself has yet to be completed, Mann has released several of the songs she wrote for it as a new album called Queens of the Summer Hotel. As you'll hear in our conversation, mental health and mental illness is familiar songwriting territory for Mann.

Before listening to our conversation, I do want to let you know: In this interview, there is some discussion of suicide. If you are in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

This session begins with a performance of the opening track of Queens of the Summer Hotel, "You Fall."
