This week's All Songs Considered features a new single from Sylvan Esso and newly discovered tapes of Lou Reed that have been sitting in a sealed, self-addressed envelope for nearly five decades. I'll play a very early rendition of what would become a Velvet Underground classic, "I'm Waiting For The Man."
On the discovery front, I've fallen in love with the music of Annie Hamilton, a musician and visual artist from Sydney, Australia. Her debut album has the wonderful title, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past. Another debut album comes from NoSo, a musician I first discovered when they entered the Tiny Desk Contest back in 2019. Now, the Korean-American guitarist and singer has a song they wrote after completing top surgery and embracing their new gender expression. It's called "Parasites."
I discovered the voice of Tess Parks when I heard what's become just about my favorite song of 2022, "So Damned Beautiful," by the band Curse of Lono. Tess Parks joined the band for that song as a duo with singer Felix Bechtolsheimer. Now Tess Parks has a new album that I'm loving titled And Those Who Were Seen Dancing and from it I'll play the song "Wow." There's also new music from Death Cab for Cutie, who are celebrating their 25th year as a band and releasing their 10th album in September. You'll hear the explosive two-minute song "Roman Candles."
