I have a new project from Sylvan Esso's Amelia Meath and Daughter of Swords' Alexandra Sauser-Monnig. They're calling themselves The A's and mix the sounds of traditional folk with the odd sounds of ice chunks, nylon shorts, and string arrangements from Gabriel Kahane. The A's album, coming, in July is called Fruit and it's a joy.
I've fallen hard for the voice of S.G. Goodman and her album Teeth Marks. The artist is from Kentucky with a voice that is best described as if she grew up singing with the old ladies in the church, which in fact she did three times a week. I also have a scorching song from New Zealand's The Beths. This frenetic tune has the ironic title, "Silence is Golden."
Another volume-heavy guitar tune comes from Madison Cunningham called "Hospital," from her new record Revealer, which is out September 9. Then I've got a quiet song from the artist formerly known as Free Cake For Every Creature, now known as Katie Bejsiuk. Her song "Olive, Ny" speaks to the American dream and the hardship of finding a home in the days of COVID.
Our final music comes from Tamino, a Belgian-Egyptian musician with an astonishing voice — and, for the first time, he accompanies himself on the oud. The song from his new album Sahar is called "The First Disciple."
