M.I.A. became one of the first major musical stars of the Internet era, as songs like "Paper Planes" made their way from MP3 blogs to radio playlists. Now six albums into her career, she's back with her first album since 2016: Mata finds her sounding creatively reinvigorated, with brightly catchy songs that recall her early breakthrough work.

We've also got new albums from Swedish-born dance-pop star Tove Lo, genre-obliterating maverick Mykki Blanco, polarizing English band The 1975 and Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose new two-hour set accompanies the Netflix anime series Exception. On this week's New Music Friday, NPR Music contributors Christina Lee and Cyrena Touros, as well as Radio Milwaukee's Tarik Moody, join guest host Stephen Thompson.
