Rapper Black Thought is best known for his work with The Roots, but in the last year he's put out a pair of collaborations under his own name. In 2022, he made an album called Cheat Codes with producer Danger Mouse and now he's got a new record with the "cinematic soul" band El Michels Affair. Led by Leon Michels, the group lays down a timeless, funky, loop-driven backdrop for Black Thought's thoughtful, clever, hard-won observations on Glorious Game.

We've also got new albums from inventive veteran pop star Feist, subtle and soulful young folksinger Abraham Alexander, "noirwave" electro-pop musician Petite Noir and singer-songwriter Kara Jackson, whose lyrics reflect her credentials as the U.S.'s former National Youth Poet Laureate. On this week's New Music Friday, Vocalo Radio 91's Ayana Contreras, Radio Milwaukee's Tarik Moody and NPR Music's Ann Powers join guest host Stephen Thompson.
