Day-long summit features live onstage interviews by podcast creator and host Guy Raz with founders of Airbnb, Lyft, Rent the Runway, and more

April 16, 2018; Washington, D.C. - Following the chart-topping debut of its entrepreneurship podcast, NPR is pleased to announce the first How I Built This Summit with Guy Raz, sponsored by American Express, is set to take place on October 16, 2018 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Like the podcast, the day's programming will inspire attendees to think big as they build their own ventures. Tickets, schedule, and planned programming are available now at

This one-day summit will feature host and creator Guy Raz's live intimate conversations with entrepreneurial superstars, plus breakout sessions focused on how building a business affects an entrepreneur's entire life. The summit will also include guided networking to build connections and help foster a community that will live beyond the event.

American Express, a multi-year sponsor of NPR and the How I Built This franchise, expands its support as Presenting Sponsor of the How I Built This Summit with Guy Raz.

"How I Built This has inspired a whole tribe of entrepreneurs, idealists, dreamers and seekers across the country and even around the world to build and innovate and create," says podcast creator and host Guy Raz. "This summit will be the first time our listeners will officially gather to exchange ideas, hear from some of the most successful entrepreneurs, collaborate and maybe even figure out how to build the next great business. And San Francisco, as America's hub of innovation and technology, is the perfect city to host our inaugural summit."

Industry luminaries like Rent the Runway's Jennifer Hyman, Joe Gebbia of Airbnb, Lyft's John Zimmer, Stitch Fix's Katrina Lake, and Lisa Priceof Carol's Daughter have all been confirmed as guests for the main stage conversations with Guy Raz.

Additional programming at the summit serves the holistic entrepreneur, recognizing that building a business can be all-consuming. The support track will feature interactive conversations designed to address the internal challenges entrepreneurs face, from managing stress to overcoming introversion and imposter syndrome.

The skills track will include expert lightning lessons on the core business drivers of any business, from user acquisition to how to pitch. Rounding out the program will be opportunities to engage in guided peer networking and mentorship sessions. With networking and mentorship also built into the schedule, the How I Built This Summit is a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs to learn, connect, and become part of a like-minded community as they build businesses and unleash their potential.

"After bringing several sold-out How I Built This tapings to audiences across the country, this opportunity feels like the natural next step," adds Jessica Goldstein, NPR Director of Events and Strategic Initiatives. "San Francisco is the ideal stage for meaningful, earnest conversations about entrepreneurship in 2018. These conversations will be fueled by what makes the show unique: storytelling."

"We're excited to build upon our sponsorship of NPR and 'How I Built This,'" said Jill Hamilton, Vice President, US Media, American Express. "With 40% of our billings derived from our commercial business, sponsoring the HIBT Summit will help us underscore our commitment to supporting entrepreneurs and innovators and allow us to connect on a more personal level."

After its successful 2016 debut, the How I Built This podcast earned accolades from outlets like The Washington Post, Forbes, Esquire, WIRED, BuzzFeed and Refinery29, and quickly established itself as a leader in the Apple Podcasts charts.
