NPR and bigchalk.com Join Forces to Provide Online Content for Teachers and Students Across the Country
Collaborative Educational Web Site to Feature NPR Content and Audio
NEW YORK - National Public Radio® (NPR®) and bigchalk.com, a premiere online learning destination, today announced a joint effort to provide high-quality learning materials for America's schools by creating and distributing original Internet-based content for the education community. This fall, NPR and bigchalk.com will launch an educational Web resource featuring NPR content and audio, combined with lesson plans, student activities and opportunities for classroom collaboration. Initially, the site will bring teachers and students NPR election coverage from Morning Edition®, All Things Considered®, and Talk of the Nation®, with future content expanding to include a range of news and current affairs topics.
"We are delighted to be teaming with NPR - this partnership enables us to offer the highest quality multi-media learning experience for teachers and students," said Dr. Barbara Kurshan, bigchalk.com Executive Vice President and Chief Education Officer. Kurshan added, "NPR's award-winning journalism makes NPR content a tremendous resource for teachers and students."
"The Internet allows radio to become a truly interactive medium," said MJ Bear, NPR's Vice President for Online. "NPR OnlineSM and bigchalk.com are working to bring radio into the classroom in a new way. The Web site will not only educate our youth on important issues of the day, it will enhance the learning experience for the next generation of decision makers and leaders."
"Through bigchalk.com's patented ExplorAsource engine, the project's lesson plans will be correlated to state and national standards of learning," said Dr. Kurshan. "Teachers will be able to integrate the NPR news and activities into their daily lessons, reinforcing bigchalk.com's core mission to provide the highest quality educational products and services to meet the diverse
needs of the entire learning community." bigchalk.com will also include content from its "best-of-web" HomeworkCentral database.
Renowned for its journalistic excellence and standard-setting news, information and cultural programming, NPR reaches a growing audience of nearly 15 million Americans each week via more than 644 public radio stations. NPR also distributes programming to listeners in Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa via NPR WorldwideSM, to military installations overseas via American Forces Network and throughout Japan via cable.
In recent years, NPR has expanded its reach onto the Internet with NPR Online at www.npr.org.
