But as soon as guitarists could plug into an amplifier, the electric guitar started making its presence felt as an improvisational voice in jazz. Every guitarist now playing owes something to at least one of these pioneering jazz guitarists.

August 13, 2009 • The guitarist and inventor who helped bring about the rise of rock 'n' roll and multitrack recording died of complications from pneumonia Thursday at a hospital in White Plains, N.Y. He was 94.
