First Listen: Surfer Blood, 'Pythons'

On its second album, the beachy pop-rock band balances its fussy, studio-bound side with rich full-band chemistry and songs whose hooks pop into your thoughts days later. Pythons is more streamlined and straight-ahead than 2010's Astro Coast, but it's still catchy as anything.

SXSW 2010: Surfer Blood, Live In Concert

The Florida band's self-described "anthemic, bombastic, life-affirming indie-pop" project seems to have arisen as spontaneously as its name, which came up when one of Surfer Blood's members shouted it out in a car at random. The group performed at NPR Music's daytime party in Austin, Texas, on March 18.
