Jimmie Dale Gilmore Pays Tribute to His Father

Jimmie Dale Gilmore's new album — his seventh — is called Come on Back and it's a memorial to his late father. He died of ALS in 2000. The album includes version of his dad's favorite songs like Pick Me Up on Your Way Down and Walkin' The Floor Over You. Gilmore was born, raised and lives in Texas. He has been recording solo albums since 1988, when he released Fair and Square.

The Texas singer/songwriter's been a tough artist to categorize: country music stations are not likely to put him in heavy rotation, but stations with American roots-type shows have been interested in Gilmore's twangy take on several non-country tunes, including Mac the Knife and the Grateful Dead's Ripple.

In 1973, three songwriters released their first album together; it was available only as an 8-track tape. The record was reissued 18 years later, after each member (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock) had risen to individual fame. With its classic Texas sound intact, the band plays songs from its new album.
