Chafee Shakes Up Race In Rhode Island

Don Carcieri (R), first elected in 2002, is term limited. With Carcieri leaving office with poor approval numbers, one would expect the Democratic candidate, General Treasurer Frank Caprio, to be a clear favorite to take the governorship back, especially against John Robitaille, the Republican candidate, who served as a senior aide to Carcieri. But the presence of a third candidate in the race has made this intriguing. He's Lincoln Chafee, a former liberal Republican senator who was voted out of office in the anti-GOP tide of 2006 but who is trying to appeal to moderate Democrats in this overwhelmingly Democratic state. -Ken Rudin

Will Rhode Island Put An Independent In The Governor's Seat?

The state holds its primary on Sept. 14. Incumbent Don Carcieri (R), first elected in 2002, is term limited. Among those vying to replace him is former GOP Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who is running as an independent. That makes this one a tossup -- between Democrat and independent. -Ken Rudin
