The 'Unbeatable' Shelby

Richard Shelby (R) was first elected in 1986 and is seeking fifth term. Whether running as a Democrat, which he did before his party switch in November 1994, or as a Republican, Shelby has been unbeatable in Alabama, and that is likely going to be the case this year. An influential and powerful member of the Appropriations Committee, he is also a prodigious fundraiser. Not that he needs it this year. He is expected to breeze past attorney William Barnes (D). -Ken Rudin
