Stephen George
Head of Emerging Markets, American Journalism Project
Stephen George is a member of the NPR Board of Directors.
George has spent most of his career in journalism — as a reporter, editor and executive. Most recently, he served as President and CEO of Louisville Public Media, where he led a major expansion of its newsroom, new products and audience growth that included both news and music services, and expansive revenue development. As President and CEO of Louisville Public Media, he also served as NPR's Member Director from February 2023 to December 2024. He previously served as executive editor of LPM, where he led a team that produced Peabody Award-winning journalism.
George also served as editor-in-chief of the Nashville City Paper and LEO Weekly, Louisville's alternative newsweekly. His writing has appeared in a variety of local, state and national media.
George is active in the nonprofit community in Louisville, serving on the board of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. Previously, he served in the congressional offices of two members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
A lifelong consumer of public radio, George is a sustaining member of LPM and believes in the power of civic media to make communities more equitable.
